Spondylolisthesis in Lagos
Spondylolisthesis refers to a condition where one vertebral bone slides forward over the bone below it. It happens when there is a problem with one of the small joints that line up the bones in your back. This can cause the vertebral bone to get out of alignment. The condition can afflict children and teenagers who play sports that stress the bones in the back, as well as adults due to normal wear and tear.
The condition tends to occur most frequently in the lower back area. Since this can result in the nerve roots or spinal cord getting pinched, spondylolisthesis can lead to back pain. Other symptoms include:
- Back, leg or buttock pain that intensifies while bending
- Numbness/weakness in the legs
- Loss of control over bladder or bowels (rare)
- Pain radiating from the lower back down the leg(s)
- Difficulty in walking.
However, patients may not experience any symptoms at all if a vertebra slips out of position, or may not experience them for many years.
