Osgood Schlatters disease primarily affects children particularly boys who are between 10 to 15 years old and results in knee pain. The injury occurs through overuse in young athletes, especially when the rate of growth of bones is faster than that of the muscles and tendons.
It is important to diagnose and treat the condition early in life, as it becomes more problematic to treat later on. Symptoms of the disease include:
- Pain, swelling and/or inflammation at the tibial tuberosity (the bony bit at the top of the shin)
- Tenderness and pain that worsens during exercise, especially squats
